EvilWezil - Quitters (Demo)
Too much information from the audio nook:
Egads! A breakthrough. Thus far, any and all attempts to properly mix my 8-bit with vocals or other instrumentation has resulted in an ear-achingly mono pile of noise. I have stereo imaging plugins that can push that sound out of the middle and towards the sides, but I couldn’t use that to the extent I wanted to because of science*. Also, when I used it, I lost the actual stereo effects I programmed into the song. (Although stereo, the gameboy can only produce sounds hard left, hard right, and center. Thus the constant mono with brief stereo effects.) So to keep the stereo effects, I inverted the left channel, phasing out all of the everything in the center forever. Pushed that to far left and right, threw a tempo-timed delay on it, mixed it with the other highly-fucked with slightly-stereo imaged signal, and bam. I got me a hole right in the middle of the song without losing any important stuff. It also took way too much time.
Levels and EQ are still a bit rough around the edges, but damn fine start.
*(Its the same faux-surround idea that’s on your TV’s and shitty speaker systems everywhere. Which is a huge problem. See, the way that stuff works is through phase cancellation, inverting one of the signals to erase bits of the sound that appears in both signals, aka the center. So, if you put that through ANOTHER faux-surround processor, it’ll invert one of the signals AGAIN, meaning… it completely undoes it. Or, in the much worse case of my macbook, it phases it out almost entirely, leaving all of the gameboy data a strange, warbly, 10% volume shell of what it once was, while doing nothing to the vocals and autoharp. Very strange. In case you were wondering, I guess macbooks use faux-surround to make their pissy speakers sound bigger… SCIENCE! Fortunately the plugin I was using has an option to push the sound without inverting either signal, resulting in a much less potent, and actually lopsided effect, but it was enough.)
